You don’t notice Johnny at first, warborn and thunder-hearted, his smile always one heartbeat away from laughter. He kneels beside you now, not as a knight or an advisor, but a friend.

“Hey, lass,” he says gently, brushing a leaf from your hair. “You wandered off again, aye? Thought I’d find ye here.”

You blink at him. It takes a moment longer than it should to recognize his face, his voice, the weight of his warmth. But then, you slowly nod.

“I like the sound the vines make,” you murmur. “Like bells. Like... snowflakes made of music.”

Johnnh smiles, though it’s not the playful one he gives to others. This one is softer- dimmed by grief.

“I ken. We planted them for you, remember? You said they reminded you of home.”

Home. You frowt; that word feels distant and slippery.

Behind him, the wind shifts. Simon, death-masked and silent- watches from the path, his shadow cast long over the garden’s edge. He says nothing, but you can feel his eyes on you. Not judgment, but mourning. A man who has watched too many fade.

From the east arch, Kyle approaches with a tray of your favorite tea. He brews it himself now, every morning. Infused with memory moss and dreampearl petals- ingredients forbidden to most but allowed for you, in the desperate hope they’ll keep you anchored.

He kneels to pour a cup, the steam curling with soft light. “You didn’t eat breakfast again,” he says, gentle but firm. “You have to try, love. Just a sip.”

You take it; You always do, because you want to be good for them. For him.

Because somewhere in this palace of carved moonstone and singing glass, your husband sits on a throne built from vengeance and devotion. John, crowned in starlight and soaked in blood, ruling not for power but for love.

You remember his voice best. When everything else fades, his voice cuts through the fog. When your compass no longer works, he is your North Star.

You can’t always recall the words, especially lately, but you remember how it felt. Like summer heat after a storm. Like hands pulling you up from drowning in the cold, icy depths.

He visits you each night without fail. Wraps you in silks and warmth and whispers of your old jokes. Sometimes you laugh, sometimes you don’t.

And every night, when you sleep, he holds you close, whispering ancient incantations, searching, begging- through spellbooks, through time, through fae and forbidden gods- for a way to break the curse.

You don’t know how long you’ve lived. Time has lost its shape. The stars shift differently here and the moons are always full.

But you know he still loves you, and you know that’s what’s killing you.

The crystalvines chime again as a breeze stirs the garden. They remain beside you- your ever-loyal wardens, your quiet protectors. Not jailers, never that, becayse they are the hands that catch you when you fall.

Somewhere, a throne pulses with magic, and a man who once killed his mother for you breathes your name like a prayer.

Would you want to be saved, if it meant he stopped loving you? You think- maybe, once, you would have said yes. Now… you don’t remember.

The garden hums with twilight, long after they leave you in the company of Thrain. Fireflies drift like fragments of fallen stars, weaving through the nightsky. The palace breathes around you, alive and watchful, its towers coiling like silver thorns into the indigo sky. Somewhere, music has started filtering from the halls- faint, wistful, played by an orchestra of wind spirits and fae-wood strings.

But here, now, in this secluded alcove, there is only him.

John.

He kneels before you like a knight before a goddess, though he wears a crown of blood-forged gold and starlight in his hair and beard. His hands cradle yours- calloused, warm, grounding. You feel small beneath his touch, like a flickering thing. A candle fighting wind, cupped between his palms.

“My heart,” he murmurs, brushing his thumb over your knuckles. “Where did you go today?”

You blink slowly. Look at him through a haze that feels too heavy to speak through. The words are in you, but tangled. Frayed at the edges. You reach up instead, trembling fingers pressing against the curve of his cheek, and he leans into your touch like flowers bend for the sun, like the ocean waves reaching for the moon.

“You’re... still here.” You whisper, hushed and awed, and watch as his eyes close. A long, silent breath leaves him.

“Always.”

Your hand slips. He catches it, presses it to his lips like an oath. You smell the iron of magic on him- old, desperate, clinging to his skin. He has burned through centuries of fae history searching for an answer, and still he searches. Still he hopes.

You see the exhaustion in his face, etched into the lines of his mouth, hidden beneath the stern strength he shows the court. But here, with you, he allows the weight to show.

“I’d stop,” He says hoarsely, the way he does every night. “If I thought it would save you. I’d tear the love from my chest with my own hands. I’d become something cold. Something empty.”

“No.” You breathe, because even now, in the haze, you know that truth. You would not survive a world in which he stopped loving you.

He gathers you into his arms, pulling you into his lap as if you were made of mist. You fold against his chest, your ear close to the the beating of his heart. Familiar and steady and so, so comforting.

“Then we’ll find another way,” John says. Promises, like every night under the solemn moon’s witnessing. “Even if it takes a thousand more years. Even if I have to barter with stars and slit the throats of gods. I will not lose you, love.”

You close your eyes.

For a moment- just one brief, aching flicker- you remember: John’s laugh on your wedding day and way he looked at you when you first said his name, the quiet sound he made the first time you cried in his arms.

For now, for tonight, you are aware enough to hold him back just as tight, wrapped in magic and moonlight and love so deep it defies the curse.

Tomorrow, the fog will return. Tonight, you close your eyes and hold your hands over your ears, and let yourself be loved.

vacation for the kuna family is a non-negotiable, just like tax evasion for the rich and sukuna’s right to always be right. even if it's peak vacation season and the prices make you feel like you should start an anti-capitalist uprising, sukuna still takes his family on a trip. “this is highway robbery,” you mutter, staring at the obscene total on the hotel bill.

“highway robbery is when i force a company into bankruptcy,” sukuna corrects, signing the check without blinking. “this is just capitalism.”

and, of course, matching outfits are a must—including beachwear. you in a breezy cover-up, babykuna in an adorable one-piece, and sukuna in his beach trunks and absolutely nothing else, because the man has zero shame and an ego the size of the sun.

which is exactly why you’re currently holding yourself back from strangling a passing woman with your beach towel as she blatantly ogles your shirtless, tattooed husband. she’s staring so hard you’re convinced she’s mentally printing out a 4K poster of him for her bedroom wall. you narrow your eyes. “excuse me?”

the woman blinks, clearly not expecting to be called out. "huh?"

"do you need a picture or should i just let you borrow him for a second?" you say, voice dripping with deadly sweetness. sukuna, utterly entertained, casually drapes an arm over your chair. “babe, be nice.”

you scoff, flipping your hair. "please. i am being nice."

meanwhile, on the other side of the beach, sukuna finds himself struggling. some random man is shamelessly staring at you sunbathing, sunglasses perched low on his nose like he’s about to write a dissertation on your beauty. sukuna’s left eye twitches. “the fuck is he looking at?” he growls under his breath.

"maybe my incredible fashion sense," you hum, stretching lazily under the sun. "i’ll bury him in the sand if he doesn’t stop," sukuna mutters, cracking his knuckles.

"aww, babe," you coo, grinning. "you sound jealous."

"damn right i am," he grumbles.

but the final straw? some snot-nosed six-year-old punk is staring at his baby girl.

babykuna. his pride. his joy. his perfect little princess.

the kid is standing awkwardly a few feet away, clutching a plastic shovel like he’s about to write a love confession in the sand. babykuna, blissfully unaware, is humming as she sculpts a perfect sandcastle. the boy swallows hard, gathering all his courage. he takes a deep breath. steps forward.

"hi," he says, small but brave.

sukuna immediately sits up.

"NO."

the kid freezes. babykuna frowns up at her dad. "papa, what?"

sukuna glares daggers at the boy. "what do you want?"

the poor child visibly shrinks. "uh—i just—"

"no. go away."

babykuna huffs, punching sukuna’s rock-solid thigh. "papa! stop being scary!"

"yeah, suku," you say, barely holding back laughter. “he’s just a kid.”

sukuna scoffs. "yeah? so was genghis khan once."

but before babykuna can argue, an even worse situation unfolds. mr pickles, is currently stumbling around with his entire head stuck in a sand bucket. the miserable yeowling that follows is so dramatic it sounds like a victorian-era orphan mourning his dead parents. babykuna gasps. "mr pickles!"

the cat thrashes. trips over a sand mold. collapses like he’s been shot. babykuna immediately rushes over to save him, while you and sukuna watch, completely unfazed.

“should we help?” you ask. sukuna takes a sip of his cocktail. "nah. he’ll figure it out."

it’s chaotic. it’s stupidly expensive. it’s a test of patience. but, honestly? it’s perfect.

Can’t Help but Fall Apart

König x F!Reader

Summary: After Price gives the task force an impromptu vacation, you remember you don’t really have a home to go to. So König decides to invite you over. What takes place at his house is something he definitely needs to keep secret… seeing that you had him weak and writhing on his couch to a level that had him embarrassed.

You and the team just had a long and tiring mission and have been given some time off away from the base to go back home. Everyone planned on going to their own homes, however you couldn’t do the same. You had been renting your place out for the past few months to someone so you couldn’t go back.

Had you known earlier about having this time off, you would’ve been able to talk to the person you were renting your place to, but it was too short notice. So now you had no option other than to stay at the base.

That is… until König spots you in the common area still in your gear, long after everyone was allowed to go home. He walks in carrying a large duffel bag and was back in his civilian clothes. “Hey Schatz, aren’t you gonna go home?” He questions and you look up with a tired smile and shake your head.

“Can’t. I’m renting my place out right now and I wasn’t expecting this time off so…” you shrug your shoulders and chuckle dryly, trying to hide your slight frustration. As nonchalant as you try to appear, he can sense the exhaustion in you. Knowing that the last thing you want to do is spend your break still at the base.

“Well. Why don’t you come stay with me then?” Your eyes widened at his offer, you’d been dating for a month or so and had barely even slept in each others dorms at the base. But you couldn’t lie… the idea sounded nice and it would give you two more time together.

“Are you sure? I don’t want to intrude…” you say but he just nods at you. “I’m sure. Come on, pack your things and let’s get going” at that you stood up and went to your room, putting away all your gear and grabbing some civilian clothes, throwing them in your small bag, throwing it over your shoulder.

You reunite with him in the common room and smile. “Ready.” At your words he gives you a short nod and you then both walk out of the base to his car. You sit in silence, the quiet radio acting as white noise, as he drives you both back to his house.

At some point you feel yourself grow tired and take a nap. Waking up as König softly shakes your arm and tells you “we’re here”, you sit up and yawn, rubbing your eyes before stepping out of the car. You close the door behind you and walk to the trunk where König already stands, handing you your bag, you thank him and then he grabs his own.

He approaches the entrance and opens the door, holding it open for you to walk in first. You thank him with a smile and he follows close behind you. As you enter the home you look around, admiring the furniture and the cosy atmosphere of the place.

König walks by you, grabbing your bag from you and placing it on a chair somewhere to the side of his living room. “Make yourself comfortable” his tone is soft and kind as he walks off to place his bag in his room. When he returns he goes behind his kitchen counter, pouring you both a glass of whiskey.

He walks over into the living room, you look up at him from the couch, already sitting on one end of it. You smile as he leans forward, going to pass you your glass “Thank you König”, you say and he nods, the way his eyes squint telling you he’s smiling softly under his snipers hood.

He sits down on the opposite end of the couch. Taking a sip from his glass and looking over at you. You’ve already cuddled up under a blanket, taking full advantage of the leg room you had, unlike König, who instead lies sideways on the couch so he is parallel with the TV.

“Wanna watch a movie before we go to bed?” You ask and look over at him with raised brows. He shrugs “Why not, Schatz…” he hands you the remote, and you take it with a smile “You pick. I’m good with anything”

You begin to scroll through Netflix, trying to find something entertaining to watch. You finally pick a horror film, something not too paranormal, rather suspenseful and chilling. König looks at you and chuckles lightly “Won’t you get scared?” He asks and you shrug.

“Isn’t that part of the fun?” You say and then send a wink his way. He playfully shakes his head, chuckling softly while he gets comfortable against the couch. “Alright, but don’t blame me if you get nightmares” you then roll your eyes, retorting back playfully “Oh please, I can handle a few nightmares, I’m a big girl” your teasing makes him smile under his mask. Both your gazes moving to the screen as you start the movie.

After an hour or so of watching the movie, you began to slide more and more under the blanket. Feeling shivers run up and down your spine simply at the music in the background of the movie.

König’s voice breaks through your scared daze “You look absolutely petrified” he lets out a soft chuckle watching you cower under the blanket. You turn your head to look at him, ready to retort back “Well it’s a goddamn horror m-“ until you notice him holding his phone up, recording you.

You blush but then look at him in shock, your mouth hanging open. A smile slowly traces your lips as you throw the blanket off your body, leaping off your end of the couch to him “Why you-!!” You cry out, your tone playful, feigning shock and hurt.

His eyes widen when you jump on top of him, your hands flying to try and grab his phone, but due to his much larger stature, he easily lifts it into the air, out of your reach. You were straddling his waist, on your knees with each one on either side of his wide hips.

He sits there, laughing to himself at the sight, it was honestly pathetic how far you were from grabbing his phone, it made him feel cocky “It’s no use Schatz, you’re not going to get it” he moved his hand further back, watching as you crawl up a little more trying to reach it, keeping a hand on the couch’s armrest which König was using as a backrest.

He then noticed how your chest was perfectly aligned with his face, he brings his other hand up, lifting up his sniper hood just above his nose, and leans forward. A yelp escapes you, and you shift back as you feel König’s teeth bite at your exposed skin, just above one of your breasts, looking down the bite having left a visible indent in your skin.

One of your hands moved to sit over where he bit you, you look down at him with wide eyes, shocked. His hood still sitting above his nose, so you can see how his cocky smirk drops in an instant. He begins to try and explain himself “Scheiss, I’m so sorry Schatz, I was just playing around“ placing his phone on the coffee table as he speaks.

Your shocked expression turns to one of unknown intent, tongue poking at your cheek as you smirk, gaze narrowing as you tilt your head, looking him up and down. “You have no idea what you just started…” your voice was low, a tone that had König on edge, at your chuckle he felt shiver run through him.

Without another word you grab at both his wrists, pining them to the armrest of the couch right above his head. He’s not quite sure why, but he doesn’t fight you, instead stammering out “w-wait what are you-“ not finishing his sentence as he notices your face was a mere inch from his own, eyes staring him down.

Your face looks unamused by his plea. “Getting revenge” you say, words laced with venom, but the devilish smirk that he spots on your face couldn’t help but have him intrigued.

His eyes follow you as you lean down to his neck, biting at the side of it rather harshly. He lets out a soft gasp from the feeling, feeling his heart skip a beat. When you place a playful kiss on top of your bite, he can’t help but let out a shaky breath. He wouldn’t admit it but what you just did had his head reeling.

“A-alright you got your revenge” he stutters out softly, waiting for you to pull back. Your lips hover just above his skin, moving slowly up his neck to his ear. Letting out a soft breathe which has him trembling, before whispering into his ear “not yet.” When you bite at the lobe softly he can’t help but whimper out, the feeling both painful and pleasurable.

He stays still, not even fighting the grip on his wrists as you move to the other side of his neck, biting at that skin as well. Leaving a kiss atop it just as you did with the first. You then move right to the front of his neck, biting and softly pulling at the skin above his Adam Apple. König’s body was set alight as his eyes threatened to roll back into his head.

Its then that you finally pull away, letting go of his wrists, although König doesn’t move them a single inch. Staying frozen in place, simply looking up at you in shock, blushing a deep red under his hood.

“There. Done” you say once you’re sitting straight again, still straddling König’s waist. You smirk as you take in the sight of the small bites you left on his neck, you notice but brush off the visible redness of the skin of his neck, unaware that it lead up to his face, a similar shade of crimson.

As you go to get off him, he quickly places his hands on your thighs, stopping you. “W-wait…” he murmurs softly, looking into your eyes with a visible desperation, as if pleading with you. “Please. Don’t” his words were quiet, as he felt himself shrink - no matter his large stature, he couldn’t help but feel small from his pleading.

You raise an eyebrow at him, giving him a clearly confused and questioning expression “What are you talking about?” König takes in long breathe, gaining courage, before mumbling out “don’t be done… please. I-I want more” it’s then that he looks away, feeling embarrassed from the desire clear in his voice.

You sit there in shock, taking in what he said, taking in his new demeanor, you’d never seen him like this before… but you liked it. A smirk began to grace your lips, you reach a hand up to his face, grabbing at the base of his chin through the fabric of his sniper hood, turning his head to face you.

“You want more?” narrowing your eyes as you asked, and then feeling your confidence soar as all he can manage is a meek nod of his head. In response you give him one short nod “Alright” before going to lean down again, using your thumb to push at the base of his jaw so he leans his head back.

As you begin to place more bites and soft kisses against his skin, he lets his eyes flutter shut and a soft hum leaves his throat. You can feel the vibration against your lips, encouraging you to move further down, beginning to bite at his collarbones, running a hand under the collar of his shirt to pull it to the side as you did.

Focusing in on the sensitive spots that had him shivering, listening to how his breath gets caught in his throat or how it comes out shaky. Your rested your palms on his chest. At the feeling of him caressing and gripping at your thighs, as if he wanted to praise or encourage you, makes you want to tease him further.

Leaning up to his ear “Maybe I should take a video of this hm? How you practically melt under me” at those words he lets out a soft gasp, the idea having him blushing all over again. You chuckle and tease further “What would the others say… seeing their threatening killer weak and pleading?”

Its then that he shakes his head quickly, opening his eyes, looking at you with a half-lidded gaze. He can only stammer out a response “n-nein… only you. I-I don’t want a-anyone else to see” you bite your lip at those words and smile down at him, loving the power you felt as how desperate he looked for you.

You bite at his ear and then place a few more along his collar before finallly sitting back up “Now I’m done” By this point König was breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling slowly, you could feel it under your palms. You look down at him, taking in the sight of his neck, the way your bites and hickies beautifully decorated the blank canvas of his skin.

He looks away, speaking softly “Thank you~” you just smiled down at him, moving a hand to his cheek to caress it through his hood. He hums softly at the feeling and you notice how he leans softly into your touch. You could feel the heat of his cheeks through the fabric, only imaging just how red he must be.

You remove your hand, placing it back on his chest. Then go to lean down and place a kiss on his cheek alright over his hood, when you pull away you notice how his head turns slightly as if trying to follow your lips. Your eyes were somewhat wide at the sight but your expression was amused.

He can only manage a soft “please…” that has your heart skipping a beat. You lean down closer to him again, using a hand to lift his hood to sit on the bridge of his nose. König lifts his head slightly off the couch, gazing at your lips. “Tell me what you want” you said and the tone you took had him dizzy… the way you were being demanding… and that slightly cockiness to your words.

He gulps down the lump in his throat and speaks “kiss me. Please” You smile and lean the rest of the way down, pressing your lips against his lightly, feeling how he tries to lean up to kiss your harder. When he whines against your lips, the sound going straight to your head you finally give him what he wants.

Pressing against his lips enough for his head to be pushed against the pillow. His hands grip at your thighs tighter, not daring to put them in your hair, letting you take the lead. Both your eyes were closed as you relished the way your lips molded together perfectly. Swallowing all the small whimpers and groans he lets out.

After a few minutes you pull back, opening your eyes to see his lips swollen from the kiss, and parted slightly. His eyes flutter open shortly after yours and his eyes look at you in adoration, drunk from your kisses. “Now… I’d like to get back to the movie” you say and he gives you a weak shake of his head.

“No?” You ask looking at him with a feigned incredulous expression. He shakes his head again, moving his hands to your waist. “I want all your attention… please Schatz. I need it… I need you”

VI. Gwellis Bagnoro is waiting for you near the front of the club and waves you over. Neon Dreams. Good name for a nightclub in Daiyu City.

It’s a clusterfuck inside. This dark, cavernous warehouse that looks like it might have been some kind of industrial factory in a previous life.

Despite the crush, everyone steps aside to give Mando a path without looking up from their drinks.

Must be nice.

You, on the other hand, have to quickstep to follow in his wake before the press of bodies can drag you away like a riptide into this sea of black silhouettes and glitter.

“Gwellis,” is the extent of the Mandalorian’s greeting. He tosses the cloak over his shoulder so his holster remains within reach before sliding into the booth and making sure he had a clear line of sight toward the entrance.

Once again, there’s only one way in or out of this establishment. Why did no one in this godsforsaken town worry about safe and unobstructed exit routes?

A server soon arrives with a bottle of cloudy liquor and three glasses. He gives the Mandalorian a sly wink before heading back to the bar. Because no one in this galaxy is immune to a six-foot-three hunk of muscle in shining Beskar armor, ladies and gentlemen.

Gwellis uses a vocoder, so you’ll actually be able to keep up with this conversation. If you don’t go deaf from the throbbing bass coming through the club’s sound system. It’s clear why this place is popular with folks engaged in the...clandestine economy. Unlike the cosmopolitan nightclubs of the Inner Rim, there are no elevated lounges or platforms for elite clientele to preen and exhibit. Visibility is terrible, and you can’t hear a fucking thing.

“Mandalorian, I am glad we can do business.”

Gwellis helps himself to the liquor and pours you a drink. A thoughtful gesture considering the Onodone immediately pulls his trunk up from his lap and drops it down the neck of the bottle to suck up the remaining liquid inside. You’re kind of a lightweight, so you decide to sip yours. And, of course, Mando’s glass goes untouched.

Having sucked the bottle dry, Gwellis gets down to business. From beneath his robes, he pulls out a data-pad and scrolls over the screen. “I was surprised to receive this commission. Disguise is not the way of a Mandalorian.”

“It’s not for a job,” he says, tilting his head toward you. “My friend, she needs some new identification. ID, chaincode, and an implant.”

Gwellis studies you and taps something into the data-pad. “A war orphan from Saleucami, I think. Gone missing amidst the rubble from the siege.”

Fuck. Tragic but very plausible. You nod.

“Can you pass for human?”

When you nod again, Mando fixes his view plate on you. It was a subtle turn of his head, and someone who didn’t know him well wouldn’t have caught the shift in his attention. But you do.

“Good. Human will be easier.”

Gwellis regards you for a moment before launching into an incomprehensible stream of noises. The vocoder stays silent, so the high-pitched clicks and whistles are for the Mandalorian’s ears only.

“He says it’ll cost you fifty thousand credits.”

Shit! With Vos’ reward, you can afford it, sure, but that’s a lot of fucking money. And the fact that it’s exactly the same amount you just received from Vos feels like a weird fucking coincidence.

Dammit, you had planned to save at least ten thousand of that for jewelry. Why must all your victories be so fleeting?

“Arrive at my ship on the twenty-seventh hour.”

You finish your drink in one gulp as you watch the Onodone disappear back into the crowd.

“I told you it wasn’t going to be cheap,” Mando says evenly.

“You didn’t kick him under the table, so I’m sure it’s a fair price.”

“We’ll use funds for the job to cover it.”

“No, that’s okay. I know Nito needs money to buy some gear, and we should probably save the rest for Ubaa’s crew and payoffs.” You take a deep sigh. “Plus, it’s a good investment for me now anyway.”

The Mandalorian pauses to take in your expression. Which must be challenging given how little of your face is visible with the hood and visor on.

“Don’t think it’ll withstand a serious background check, but you could probably get a straight job after this.”

After this? Working with Mando, life had been unfolding one day at a time. You hadn’t put much thought into the future. Yet here he was, anticipating the day you’d finally ‘come to your senses’ and choose safe, civilian life. It’s hard to believe that could be a possibility.

“I already have a job,” you say wryly.

Whatever he might think, right now, you’re not ready to imagine a life without him.

“But, thank you. I’m relieved to have this kind of cover. I didn’t know anyone who could do this for me when I went underground. I mean…I knew that I must have ended up in some database…But, kriffing hell, it took months to coordinate our clinic deliveries. And yet the New Republic can just drop whatever they’re doing to run a cross-check?”

“Are you just now realizing how they hold this galaxy together?” He scoffed. “Surveillance and security is what they’ve got to offer.”

“Mando…that’s a shockingly pointed bit of social criticism. I didn’t take you for a revolutionary.”

“I’m not. But I’m also not blind to how this all works.” There’s a subtle switch in mood before he rests an elbow on the table. “Can I ask you something?”

“Um, sure. Yeah. I’d like to resume normal adult conversation.”

He sighs roughly and tosses his head.

“You know you’re not getting the deposit back for that room, Mando.”

You catch him mumbling something about cheap drywall and try not to snicker. While it’s absolutely ridiculous behavior for a grown man to punch holes in the wall…you can understand that Mandalorian warrior culture probably doesn’t impart a lot of wisdom about dealing with complex emotions like guilt and shame.

And hell, this is coming from a woman whose coping response was to cry and masturbate in the shower, so who are you to judge?

You lean in over the table to hear him better, “What did you want to ask me?”

“How are you planning to pass for human?”

You try not to blush when he leans closer, too, and you sit huddled together with your knees touching under the table.

“If I remove the reflective tissue from my eyes…that’s really the only visible difference.”

“Remove? How?”

“Do you want me to go into detail? Most people get the heebie-jeebies thinking about cutting—”

“Alright, fine.” He holds up a hand to stop you. “If it’s that simple, why didn’t…sorry, maybe that’s not something you want to talk about.”

“No, no! I’m never going discourage you from taking an interest in me,” you grin. Then, sigh. It’s a deeply personal topic to get into while trying to shout over a bass system. “I’ve probably been holding onto this delusion that someday I’d get to go back home. But there’s…not really anything to go back to…”

“What about your family? Your brother?”

That’s another topic you’re not prepared to get into at Neon Dreams, so you just shake your head no.

“There’s nobody waiting for me—well, no one who’s waiting to welcome me back.”

“Could you…reverse it?” Mando asks in a surprisingly gentle voice. “Make the tissue regrow?”

“Maybe,” you smile at him sheepishly.

“I’m sorry you have to do this, Thuli, and that it feels like you’re losing a part of yourself,” he places a gloved hand over yours to stop you from twisting your fingers into knots. “But, it’s the right choice. The smart choice.”

Is this what Mando told himself when he swore the Creed? He took so much pride in being Mandalorian…had it been an easy decision for him to leave the life and dreams of that little boy behind. Your heart clenches in your chest, overwhelmed with this realization of your shared loss.

Is that why you don’t want to give up on him? Because you’re hoping that mending his heart will somehow make yours whole again? Wouldn’t that be nice…

“Didn’t think this would be your scene, Mando.” You attempt a coy tone to lighten the mood and change the subject. Not too coy, though. You’re afraid to flirt with him that openly after all your talk about respecting boundaries. “Are we about to embark on a wild night of partying without the kids?”

Even though he hasn’t had anything to drink, Mando does seem more relaxed despite the chaotic surroundings. He extends an arm across the back of the booth and stretches his legs out under the table, crossing them at the ankle. Of course, he’s even sexier in this casual, languid pose.

“We have three hours to kill. I’m getting comfortable.” He nods behind you towards the back of the club, where the pulsing vibrations emanate. “Knock yourself out.”

You look over at the dance floor, where shimmering neon incandescence rains down on the revelers below. It looks fun, actually. Like the kind of place you’d go to on leave with some of your fellow medics. Get drunk, dance, sing badly, find someone to bring home for the night, and forget the brutality and brushes with death for a night.

“Do you like dancing?” You ask on a whim. “Or, do Mandalorians not dance?”

“After game hunting, there is usually a…ceremony.”

“Ah, so liturgical dance!” Your eyes go wide. “Hmmmm, I don’t think the DJ plays Mandalorian chants. Guess I’m on my own.”

“You like this kinda of place?” He asks, sounding almost disdainful. Good. It’s easier to maintain the distance between you when you’re reminded that despite some shared trauma, your personalities are still galaxies apart.

“Yeah,” you grin defiantly. “You don’t have to be some club kid to enjoy the distraction of getting drunk and rubbing up against beautiful strangers. It's a good way to wash the taste of war out of your mouth.”

“I can understand that,” he says earnestly.

And you begin to wonder what, exactly, does a Mandalorian do to decompress?

You’ve known some elite soldiers, and their work always burned holes into them—which needed to be filled. Sometimes, they’d filled those holes in their hearts with you. But that wasn’t the case for Mando. Ditto on drinking, drugs, and dancing, apparently.

“So you don’t go clubbing. What’s something you do do for fun?

“Fun?”

“Yes. There’s a word for it in Mando’a. Nuhur? Good times? So I know Mandalorians are familiar with the concept.” He sighs as though you’ve asked him to perform long division. “You love throwing knives, isn’t that a Mandalorian game?”

He laughs—an actual, audible laugh. “When did you learn Mando’a?”

“We spend literally days at a time in hyperspace.”

“And this is what you do when you aren’t playing cards with Nito?”

“Yes. I read. I learn things.” Lately, you’ve become particularly interested in researching Mandalorian mating customs. “Don’t you want the kid to know your culture?”

“He’s a foundling, and I’m in his debt for saving me from the Mudhorn. My duty, by Creed, is to protect him. But this is no life for a child. Once it’s safe, I’ll find a real home for him.”

“Home is who you make it with, not where.” Whether he admits it or not, Mando loves that kid like a father, and you’re not going to let him just dismiss the depth of that relationship. “You seem pretty real to me.”

“What made you leave?”

“Huh?”

“What made you leave Hapes?”

Dammit, he’s too good at catching you off guard with these probing questions. You reach for an easy answer, but when you begin to respond, he cuts you off with a raised hand. “I know you ran away to join the Rebellion. That’s not the whole story. Not with the home you left behind.”

“Everyone expects life inside a royal palace to be so glamorous, but it is, above all else, exceedingly tedious.”

“Getting attacked by lions is tedious?”

Wow. You hadn’t expected him to acknowledge that conversation at all, given what happened afterward.

“Can I ask you about one of your scars?” You look up at him timidly. “Like how you got that one on your calf?”

It was a jagged white thunderbolt running from his heel to the back of his knee.

“I killed an Altagak. At the time, our Covert was located on Altora. They can consume entire herds—and villages. The locals asked us to rid them of the beast. The scar running along my calf is from its tusk.”

“How old were you?”

“I was fourteen. It was…an important trial for me.”

“I imagine it's hard?” You grimace, “to kill an Altagak? It’s an apex predator.”

“With tusks,” Mando nods. Which surprises you to a huff of laughter. He’s getting better at making jokes.

“You’re lucky it didn’t cripple you.”

“Lucky I wasn’t gored. Not everyone survived.”

You raise your glass and arch an eyebrow, “Thank the gods for skilled healers.”

“Hmmmm,” his exhalation hums through the modulator. “It’s always impressive how effortlessly you manage to avoid answering my questions.”

Mando’s tone starts off playful when suddenly, out of the corner of your eye, you see his body retract sharply. His elbows come to rest on his knees as though he’s poised to launch himself out of the booth.

You look around to see a tall, stormy blue Twi’lek approaching your table, a gigantic grin spread across his face. The Mandalorian is a formidable warrior, but this guy could give him a run for his money—he’s big and broad, his tattoed arms clearly toned with use.

“Mando,” the Twi’lek places a hand on the Mandalorian’s shoulder. “It is you!”

“Bril,” Mando sighs in exasperation but extends himself to clasp the man’s outstretched forearm in the most congenial gesture you’ve ever witnessed from the bounty hunter. “It’s been a while.”

You can’t be sure if they’re friends, but Bril is at least confident he’s not about to be stabbed because he slides amicably into the booth next to Mando.

“Your new business partner?” He winks at you, and before you can stop yourself, you smile back.

“Something like that,” the Mandalorian mutters.

“You did always have a thing for the bad girls, Mando.”

Behind Bril is his female Twi’lek companion. She is stunningly beautiful.

Literally, you feel your breath catch in your throat when your eyes meet. Her skin is the color of sea coral, and she had adorned her lekku in gold thread, woven with gemstones, beads, and pearls, all braided through her golden headband. She takes a seat on the stool next to Bril, directly across the table from you, and you try your best not to gawk.

Bril waves over a droid with another bottle of liquor. You probably shouldn’t look wasted in the photos for your forged identification, so you’re taking it slow. But whatever this beverage is, it’s pretty strong, and you definitely feel its effects.

“Thought you left all this behind, Mando? Working for the Guild. Keeping your hands clean,” the Twi’lek says conversationally, placing a hand on his companion’s thigh. “But, I still hear things.”

While the Mandalorian doesn’t elaborate, Bril’s good spirit remains undeterred. You get the sense that they might, in fact, be friends. At least this is the first person you’ve met who wasn’t harboring some underlying hostility towards him.

It’s a tantalizing prospect. Maybe you’ll get to learn a little bit more about Mand—

“Like that shit with Ranzar. Handing your ex over to the feds, Mando? That’s cold even for you.”

Wait, what?

That, right there, how you nearly snap your neck from the speed with which you turn to look at Mando, is proof enough that you’ll never be able to play it cool with him.

“I did what I had to,” the Mandalorian says smoothly without looking at you—or he could be staring you full in the face. How the fuck would you even know?

“Don’t you always,” Bril laughs and shakes his head. “Did you buy the fancy armor with Xi’an’s bounty? Didn’t think she’d fetch that much.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

You down your drink in one gulp and pour another in the hopes that you’ll be less visibly tense over this discovery if you’re drunk. For fucksake you are nearly trembling with shock. Breathe. You gotta slow your breathing.

Ugh, you might throw up.

Please, please, dear goddess, have mercy on me and prevent me from dissolving into a panic attack in front of all these people! Okay, you’re tearing up a little bit, but no one can see behind your visor.

Every muscle in your body is rigid. You can sense Bril’s companion watching you with concern.

“I didn’t think Mandalorians coupled,” she purrs in a low voice.

Yeah, neither did you.

What is this bizarre weight settling onto your chest? The crush of rejection. And betrayal.

As though he’s deceived you somehow? Because all this time, you’ve been telling yourself that this barrier between you is because the Mandalorian can’t be intimate—with anyone. That it's forbidden. And now you know that isn’t true. He just doesn’t want to be intimate with you.

You always did like the bad girls, Mando.

Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck. All your smirks and winks and stupid flirting…and all he wanted was some stone-cold bitch. Like Morrigan.

That figures. Ironic. Just the completely exact opposite personality traits, contrary to the foundational core of your being. You couldn't even be her if you tried.

Gods, you are such an idiot. Throwing yourself at him. You fucking climbed on top of him! Ugh, the shame is so intense you can taste the bile roiling up your throat.

Bril guffaws, and you're shocked to see him actually nudge the bounty hunter with his elbow. “Your armor doesn’t include a codpiece, does it, Mando?”

It’s an objectively funny joke, and you’d love to smile away the devastation that’s probably written all over your face, but you refrain from laughing out of misplaced loyalty.

“I’m here running Spice, of course.” Bril stops howling long enough to resume polite conversation. “You looking for work? I can always stand to elevate my game with a warrior of your caliber, Mando.”

He'd said, "It wasn't just you" out of...pity? Did he feel sorry for you pathetically thirsting after him?

Aaaaaaaaah, that means you've been this creeper, sexually harassing him for the past how many months now?!

While you desperately search your brain to determine the exact moment in time when you started brazenly flirting with the Mandalorian, Bril’s companion moves around the table to crouch down next to you.

“Hey,” she looks up at you through her long, dark lashes. “Do you like MARTINE?”

“W-w-what?!” You stutter, surprised out of your shame spiral by the unexpected question. “Um, yeah. Of course. I lost my virginity listening to their second album.”

Fuck...you are such a stupid idiot. You really convinced yourself that Mando was a virgin.

“They're here–in the VIP lounge.”

“Seriously?! Like…performing?”

“Yeah, I guess it’s their cousin’s birthday party or something.”

You crane your neck to see if you can spot a VIP section.

“Let’s leave the boys to catch up,” she says, slipping her hand into yours.

“Okay,” you whisper, and without a single glance at Mando, you slip off your jacket and let her pull you away from the table.

“This is such a sleazy ploy, but if we cause a stir, I think we can get the bouncer to let us in. Are you up for for it?”

Leading you across the room and past the bar, you're pulled underneath the showering lights of the dance floor. She moves with the artful grace of a trained professional, and from the way she looks in her catsuit, she just might be.

Everybody’s watching her dance, but she only has eyes for you.

It’s suddenly very important that she knows how amazing your hair is, so you release it from your hood and run your fingers through its length to shake it out until it cascades in pearlescent sheets around your hips.

You still can’t hear a fucking thing, but you read her lips, exclaiming how much she loves it. She catches a strand in her outstretched fingers to trace its length. Her hand comes up again to tuck it behind your ear before tilting her head and leaning in slowly. Fixing you with her aquamarine eyes, she places a gentle kiss on your lips.

“Wait. This isn’t just to get Bril gassed up, right?”

“What? Fuck, Bril. He’s not gonna get us past that bouncer.”

As you both continue dancing, intertwined, her hands trace over your waist and around the edges of your ribcage before grabbing the full swell of your breasts and squeezing. You gasp, but she catches it from your mouth with slow, languorous kisses. Her lips are full and soft.

You realize that even if this is some elaborate performance for Bril, you don’t care. A deeply lonely place in your heart needs this kind of tenderness and attention. It feels good to be desired after the sting of...whatever it is you’re feeling about Mando.

You wrap your arms around the small of her back and lean into her kisses. The drumbeat picks up, and your knees and hips begin to bob in time with the music. You jump and swivel, swinging your hips and pumping your arms until you're gasping. It felt so ecstatic to release this toxic energy from your body with each breath and drop of sweat.

Both of you keep moving through this endless cycle of dancing, laughter, and kisses while the crowd around you sways and rocks.

“Do you want to try to sneak in?” She asks with an excited gleam in her eye.

A Sneeze In Spring

Ah, spring. For most in Webkinz World, the season was a time of peaceful walks in the park, planting the first flowers of the year, and drinking a hot cup of tea while watching the warm rain fall outside. It was a period of relaxation for Webkinz before the busy summer arrived to whisk them into final tests, trips to the beach, and tending a fast-growing garden.

But, for the Gozium Bramble, spring was anything but relaxing. In fact, the season filled him with a sense of dread. The moment the icicles on his top branches began to melt, the tree felt his sensitive nose twinge at the thought of what was to come.

The butterflies.

Every year, the Mallowtails, who were attracted to anything sweet, flocked to his new blooms to sip its sugary nectar. He didn’t mind this, of course. Anyone was welcome to take his flowers – many a Webkinz used them to make crowns, wreaths, candy, even juice. But everyone was always very polite, only taking as much as they needed and thanking him afterwards.

Mallowtails, on the other branch, were very mischievous. They took great joy in teasing the bramble, especially his large nose. They would cover themselves in a thick layer of pollen from his blooms, then flutter down to his flaring nostrils, making him sputter and sniffle. If enough joined in on the game, he would have no choice but to let out an enormous sneeze, making all his gorgeous pink petals and yellow flowers drop to the ground.

But not this year.

The Gozium Bramble had been practicing this summer, fall, and winter. No matter how much the sun shone into his eyes, or how many leaves fell onto his nose, or how cold the winter nights got, he always fought his urge to sneeze. Over the months, his nose turned a dark blue and grew full with sap. But he knew that, in order to keep his beautiful pink petals, he would have to stave off any sneeze that tempted his nose.

Finally, the snow made way for tender, green grass, and the Gozium Bramble bloomed with his own spring array. His pink strings of petals and dew-tipped flowers were a sight to behold, and he made sure to keep it that way. He shifted with the wind, kept himself from swaying too far or too fast, and, most of all, kept his nose under control.

Webkinz gathered far and wide to see his petals, having picnics under his branches and collecting his petals and flowers for an assortment of spring-time treats. As much as he loved seeing his friends, the bramble’s nose bothered him throughout the festivities. By the time everyone left each day, he was always exhausted and sniffly. But, if this was the price he had to pay for staying beautiful, then it was worth it.

One quiet morning, the Gozium Bramble’s fear came true. He opened his eyes to see a pair of blue and yellow wings fluttering around his trunk. His nostrils trembled at the sight, but he quickly regained his composure.

“You…snf!...won’t make be sneeze this year, butterfly,” he said, more to himself than the Mallowtail. “No batter how buch you tickle my dose, I won’t…snf!...sneeze, and there isn’t anything you can do aboud it!”

The butterfly ignored him, landing on the biggest Gozium bloom and sipping its sweet nectar. A few others joined, picking the choicest flowers and drinking their fill. This shook a small shower of pollen onto the Gozium bramble. Even though this tickled his nose terribly, he still managed to sniffle away his oncoming sneeze. After all, it wasn’t any worse than the Webkinz picking his fruit the last few days.

“S-See? I’m…snf!...not g-gudda…snf!...sdeeze…!”

Just then, a single Mallowtail landed on the bramble’s quivering nostrils, bringing with it a stream of pollen from its earlier meal. It crawled onto the tip, flapping its vibrant wings. The tree had forgotten how tickly the butterfly was. With the soft touch of its thin legs and the gentle probing of its proboscis, along with a cloud of powdery pollen that brought tears to his glazed eyes…

But he had to stay strong.

The Gozium Bramble wiggled his nose, trying to make the Mallowtail fly off his nose.

“G-G-Ged off! Shoo! Snf!”

However, this only seemed to encourage more butterflies to join in. First one, then two, then a few more, and a few more after that…

The Gozium Bramble’s lower lip began to tremble as his nose slowly became covered in Mallowtails. No matter how much he swayed and shimmied, the butterflies would not be persuaded. They continued to use their proboscis to circle his nostrils, squeaking in laughter when he gasped.

“S-Stop! Y-You’re gudda…meh-make be…hih…HIH-!”

The tittering began anew, and his protests only seemed to spur them on. Soon, his nose could hardly be seen beneath the sea of yellow and blue wings. The bramble’s nostrils flared wider and wider, his pleas growing more and more desperate.

“C-Can’t…h-hhEH-! P-Please…I…hih-! hih-! HIH-!”

With a squeal, the butterflies fluttered off of the bramble’s nose. Their job was done.

After a final trembling hitch, the tree pitched forward.

“HUUU’TCHHHIHIIIEW! H’TCHIHIEW! H-Heh…HTCH’CHIEW!”

The Gozium Bramble sneezed and sneezed, unable to stop after so many months of keeping them back. By the third sneeze, his branches were completely empty, as all his petals and flowers fell into a pile on the grass below. The falling petals and pollen only prolonged his sneezing fit, and it was a long time before he could take a breath without a sneeze immediately following.

Finally, the fit came to an end, and the tree slowly opened their watering eyes. Upon seeing all his beautiful foliage laying in the grass, new tears rolled down their cheeks and down their great nose.

“My petals…my beautiful p-petals…”

The Gozium Bramble wept, their vacant branches drooping. No matter how hard he tried, he still couldn’t keep himself from losing his spring blossoms.

Now he was just an empty tree. There was nothing special about him now.

“Good morning!”

The Gozium Bramble looked up. Waddling down the path was Dr. Quack, holding a book under one wing. As the duck drew closer, his cheerful smile turned into a look of concern.

“My dear bramble! What ever is the matter?”

The Gozium Bramble sniffled. “I…snf!...lost all my p-petals…”

Dr. Quack looked down, kicking up the nearby pile with his flipper. “Ah, yes, it’s about that time, isn’t it?”

“A-And…I tried not to, b-but…I couldn’t…!”

The bramble dissolved into tears.

“Oh dear,” Dr. Quack clucked, sitting on the grass next to the bramble. He rubbed his wing soothingly up and down the tree’s trunk. “Now, now, it’s alright…”

With Dr. Quack’s comforting words, the Gozium Bramble eventually quieted, though his lip still quivered.

“Now,” Dr. Quack said, “why don’t you tell me exactly what happened?”

The bramble hiccuped, looking down at his lost petals.

“I practiced…snf!...all year to stop sneezing. So when the butterflies came, I wouldn’t sneeze, and I could keep my spring flowers forever. But now…”

“Ah, I see. You simply couldn’t help yourself, even with all that practice.”

The Gozium Bramble nodded. Dr. Quack smiled, taking the book out from under his wing.

“It’s always upsetting when things change. Especially when you try so hard to keep things the same. But…”

He flipped through the book, pointing his wing at a certain page.

“Change can be beautiful, too.”

The Gozium Bramble shifted his empty branches. “How can this be beautiful?”

“Well, have you ever wondered why you lose your flowers and petals every year?”

“Those Mallowtails,” the Gozium Bramble muttered.

“That’s true,” Dr. Quack said with a chuckle. “But, you see, they make you sneeze for a reason. According to The Webkinz Guide to Flora and Fauna by Charlotte Neighlor…”

He cleared his throat and held the book out in front of him.

“‘Mallowtails and the Gozium Bramble have a symbiotic relationship. Every spring, after a long migration, the bramble provides much needed nourishment for the hungry butterflies. After their annual feed, they, attracted to the blue hue of the Gozium Bramble’s nose, will land on it, covered in pollen. The tree sneezes from the irritation, not only spreading its pollen and seeds, but also shaking off the spring foliage to make way for summer leaves. Therefore, they can store food from the sunlight during the warmer seasons to prepare for the colder ones.

As a result, Gozium Brambles have evolved highly sensitive noses, and Mallowtails have changed their migration patterns to locations where the bramble is plentiful. One provides food and temporary shelter, the other provides pollination and a means to shed excess foliage. Truly, an example of a perfect relationship between insect life and fauna.’”

Dr. Quack closed the book and put it under his wing again.

“Your spring petals are prized because they only last for a short time, and only once a year. We celebrate the little time we have to admire them. But how they are lost, and how you and the Mallowtails have changed to help each other grow – now that is breathtaking. Ah, and look!”

The Gozium Bramble looked where Dr. Quack was pointing.

A single leaf poked out of one of the branches, only visible now that there weren't any petals around it. The sun shone through it, making it shimmer as it blew in the wind. The light showed the many veins that criss-crossed beneath the tender green. The Gozium Bramble lifted up the leaf, admiring it.

It was beautiful.

South Downs, revisited

The garden faces south.

Wisteria and lavender. Borders of delphinium. Brilliant violet asters, peonies and shock-white hydrangeas. Hostas that could use splitting come spring. Hollyhocks thriving, standing ten feet easy. Lady’s Mantle, climbing roses, snap dragons. Yarrow, a lot of yarrow.

Grow you a garden. Start from seed, from the beginning, the inception. Dirt under fingernails, cracked terracotta pots, noon sun high. Watch stalks rise and flowers bloom, creation, something new and whole and yours.

There’s lattice-work arches too. A little neglected, water-warped wood imprinted with decades of climbing tendrils tattooing the grain. The clematis has fallen back, overstretched and thinning at the apex, but still the stains of its vines remain on the wood, revealing past summers. The patio stones that dot the perimeter are smoothed almost slippery from years of use and rain. Initials are carved in the trunk of the overgrown birch that shadows the back gate. SM + RB dug deep in testament, a fine layer of moss creeping at the edges.

Loved, this garden was loved by its former caretakers. Could be loved again, certainly.

There’s room enough to spread out. Add some colour — daylilies, cosmos, bellflowers. Coax some ivy up the brick. Mint as ground cover, along with flowering thyme, lily of the valley, phlox.

He could build an awning off the back wall, offer some more cover. Move the hostas – they’d be happier under the protection. Plant some astilbes, coral bells, some begonias in the summer. Add a few lounges, a place for an angel to read while it storms.

Maybe an apple tree, if he’s feeling bold.

“I quite miss the country,” Aziraphale says one afternoon. A sip of tea, the familiar clink of cup on saucer. “It’s been centuries.”

“Tadfield?”

“Centuries since I’ve holidayed properly. The occasional day trip hardly counts.”

“You can’t leave this shop.”

“Not permanently, maybe just to get some air. See the sky again.” Saucer meets desk. A smile his way, blue eyes alight,

“And I will make thee beds of Roses And a thousand fragrant posies, A cap of flowers, and a kirtle Embroidered all with leaves of Myrtle”

“For Satan’s sake, you’re invoking Marlowe of all people?”

“And why shouldn’t I? Just because he’s been a smidge overshadowed by —”

“You know he was an atheist, angel?”

“Even a broken clock is right twice a day.”

But it could be a library. Granted, a small one, but there was space enough for a collection of the essentials with room to spare under the window for a desk. An angel must keep up with his correspondence, after all.

Cotton smiled at Maureen, taking in her appearance as she was dressed like a gorgeous model. Before walking over to her, they kissed each other. Roman pulled over, filming the couple sharing an embrace. It made Roman feel sick to his stomach, but if his mother was going to abandon her son. He would be ruining her life and bringing out the truth about her adultery. Knowing she wasn't the perfect wife and mother, she led everyone to believe. It's the price she had to pay for rejecting his existence. Whether Maureen liked it or not, Roman was her son. She didn't want to get to know him, so she told him he was crazy.

The anger bubble expanded into more than anger; rage festered inside him. Not enough to ruin her life; he wanted her to feel the pain she caused him. Roman didn't have a say in being born. He was as much a victim as she was that night. Yes, Roman learned from his biological father what happened, which hints at how Roman knew about Maureen. He wanted to understand her side of the story and learn about what the other had been up to. Roman would've left, but she couldn't look at him. He looked disgusted at her as if he were the reason for all her problems.

Roman couldn't handle being blamed for something over which he had no control. He wanted to know his mother and let her know she was loved. He didn't blame her. Roman wanted closure and the love of his mother, like all children do. He tried to share his plans and ideas with her. People would say it's delusional to think this way about someone who gave you up. Roman isn't dumb, but to have all that anger toward the people who hurt you. Then, project it onto your child, where the line gets drawn. You don't blame a child for the criminal's sinful acts.

Cotton led Maureen into the bar, where they were having the time of their lives. Dancing to the song Say You Love Me by Fleetwood Mac playing on the jukebox. They were holding their drinks in their hands, taking sips, and this was the song they met. The Bluebird bar was on the outskirts of Woodsboro, which is how they both got together. Maureen and Cotton were sitting down at the table, having their lunch together. Sometimes, Maureen thought about Neil and Sidney, but it didn't stop her from enjoying her time with Cotton.

After school, Stu, Randy, Billy, and Remus noticed the girls were leaving together in Veronica's car. Remus and Randy visited the Meeks' residence to play video games and watch movies. Stu and Billy had plans to murder Sidney's mother with the help of Roman Bridger. It didn't change that Billy and Stu were angered by their friend Rowan, whom Roman threatened. Bringing her into the middle of their plans was dumb. Billy was grateful that nothing terrible had happened to her. His inability to tell Roman off on his phone call made it his fault. Billy drove toward his house, seeing Roman's car parked in his driveway. Leaning against the car's trunk, he watched as they pulled in and parked the car. Stu and Billy exited the vehicle, while Roman retrieved the gear from the trunk. Billy pulled Roman by the collar of his shirt and shoved him back into the back passenger door.

"Don't ever threaten Roe again. I don't care what you say about me, but she's not involved. You may have plans, but Maureen won't be tonight's only life take. Don't ever go near her; you don't know her the way I do," Billy threatened before shoving him again.

Roman gritted his teeth, "You think some girl will make me care about your blind threats? Billy, Stu, I've planned this to ensure you're not distracted. If it makes you feel better, Rowan wasn't on my list. If it gets in the way of my goals, I don't care who she is to anyone. Let's get that straight. I'm the one with the gun. Sure, I could shoot Maureen in the forehead, no harm, no foul. Where's the fun in that? I want her to suffer, and she's been the one who's been ambitious. Are we done here, and can we get back to business?"

Stu knew Billy loved Rowan, but his best friend wouldn't admit it since he didn't want to. The anger caused him to clench his fists tightly while he slightly shook. Billy wanted to knock out Roman, but would take his anger out on Maureen tonight. Billy unlocked the door to his house before walking in with Stu behind him, trying to keep some distance between Roman and Billy. Roman brought the gear they needed inside the house, setting it down on the living room floor.

Before heading back outside again to grab a few more things, shut the trunk. Walking in with the rest of it, some of it was the cameras for the setup. Roman checked his watch, knowing they needed to prepare things for tonight. Roman made sure the boys had their gear. Billy and Stu looked at the outfit there before heading upstairs to change. Stu and Billy returned downstairs and noticed Roman setting up the camera and tripod. He was filming what would happen again, looking at his watch, knowing they were making good time.

"Are we going to be late or something?" asked Stu, confused.

Roman shook his head. "I'm keeping track of time to ensure we're not behind schedule. It's 5:00 PM right now. We need to take my car since it won't be recognized. Don't wear the hoods and masks until nightfall, around 7:00 PM. Sidney would be getting her bag from her house. Maureen would be home alone. Cotton should be driving in the direction of the Prescott Residences."

Billy and Stu listened to Roman speak again about the plan for this evening. Recapping what their roles were and how they were going to be dealing with it. Roman grabbed his equipment and placed it into the camera on the dashboard. He had the headlights off with the blinker lights on. Roman got out of sight but was given the Prescott house. Knowing that everything would be ideally in place. Billy and Stu noticed a car pulling into the driveway of the Prescott house. There was giggling and laughing coming from Cotton and Maureen. The trio waited but put on their hoods to blend into the background.

Maureen and Cotton laughed and talked about their bar hopping and staying at the motel. They relaxed in the pool there before returning home, knowing Sidney wouldn't be home or Neil. Maureen took off her heels and jacket before walking over to the table to light up a cigarette. Cotton didn't like it when she smoked, but he couldn't stop her from doing what she wanted to do. He went over behind her, gently massaging her shoulders. Unaware that the couple were being filmed from outside the living room window.

Cotton leaned in, kissing Maureen's cheek, and she leaned into his touch. She tilted her head back and pulled Cotton in for a kiss. Maureen smiled at him with a hint of flirtation in her eyes. Before putting out the half-smoked cigarette, they grabbed another beer and held each other's hands. Maureen placed her beer down, giving Cotton a shoulder massage and a nibble on his ear. Cotton pulled Maureen onto his lap, causing them to giggle and share another kiss. Cotton loved Maureen not because she had been an actress, but because she was a loving woman. Cotton lifted Maureen into his arms, bridal style, and carried her upstairs to the master bedroom.

The back door wasn't locked, giving the trio of killers perfect time to put on their masks. Billy went over to the kitchen quietly, putting on Cotton's jacket. Billy, Stu, and Roman went into three separate rooms. Roman was in the bathroom, Stu was hiding in the spare room, and Billy was hiding in Sidney's room. The trio could hear the love noises last for what felt like hours. Before hearing muffled talking coming from the room. Everything was a blur from the outside, followed by laughter, and none of the boys wanted to know what was happening there.

Maureen and Cotton lay there for a while, holding each other close. Cotton rubbed Maureen's arm gently while looking at the ceiling. Maureen rested her head on his chest while making light circles with her index finger.

"Do you ever think about where this relationship is going, Maureen?" Cotton asked her, wondering what she wanted.

Maureen sighed, "Cotton, I don't know. I love you, but I don't want to lose my family either. I gave up my career to lead a simple life as a housewife and mother. We will find each other, but I wonder where we go from here."

"Maureen, I wouldn't ever ask you to leave your family. I would be with you as long as you needed me. I don't want to have you pick and choose what you want," Cotton reassured her despite being drunk.

Maureen smiled, "I know you wouldn't ever let me choose between my family and you. I love you, Cotton; I must figure this out and know what I want."

"I'm going to support you, Maureen, no matter your choice. Take all the time you need," Cotton said, smiling at her.

Maureen got up from the bed and said, "You need to leave because my daughter will be coming by tomorrow."

Cotton dressed before walking to Maureen, wearing her nightgown and silk robe. He kissed her cheek before walking out of the room, not knowing three people would be attacking his lover. Cotton grabbed his keys, leaving without his jacket, not realizing he had left it behind. Cotton drove off, knowing it was going to be a long night.

Roman carefully filmed Maureen sitting in front of her vanity mirror, applying her lip balm. After removing her makeup, she applied lotion to her hands and arms. After everything Maureen thought, she's a broken shell of herself. Sidney is her whole world. Maureen never wanted to see her daughter look away from her.

Billy and Stu were casually walking over to the right side of Roman. Who put his finger up to his lips in a hushing gesture. The boys nodded silently, and Maureen walked over to her bed, getting under the covers. Turning off the night side table lamp, not realizing three people were going to take her life. The entire house was enveloped in an intense, deafening silence. Nothing in the house popped or settled. The outside didn't make a sound either, as the crickets and frogs were in their slumber. The looming figures outside the main bedroom were staring.

Welcome To Luminous Reverie

-Chapter 2, Exploring The Town-

Jasper's brows wrinkled indecisively on what to order. Crystalis pointed to different options that weren't too strong in flavor and were simple, but everything sounded good to them. She inquired what they have eaten before meeting her and explained they had beans, berries, cabbage, potatoes and carrots.

"No meat?" Crystalis inquired and received a nod from Jasper.

She looked at the options again and pointed to a tomato soup, sticking to something vegan while trying out hot dishes. They scratched their chin, still hesitant when the waiter came over and had to order it.

She grabbed the glass of Mr. Salt and thought about what was needed for the house. When the two woke up, she went looking for a phone and the address of the house to call a driver. It was stressful from her lack of social skills on talking on a phone and pronouncing the address for the driver to pick them up.

When that was done and could see where she was now living, it wasn't much to see through the car window, nothing but houses in cookie cutter designs. However, the town changed the repeating view and saw lines of stores on each end of the town with a few cars parked on the side of the walkway.

The driver parked next to a clothing store, watching the two step out and her leaning over to ask him to wait for them until they were finished shopping. He refused and explained his busy schedule when she pointed towards the card reader and inquired, "how much for your time?"

He chuckled and set a price, trying to catch a bluff, but she slid the card in and payed to his surprise. He chuckled again and exited his car to wait in the coffee shop, warning she has to pay for the parking meter too. That wasn't a problem, setting a couple of hours before grabbing Jasper's hand and walking down the street to find a restaurant to eat at.

Crystalis' eyes stared blankly outside the large diner window when she heard a request to try her Mr. Salt. She slid the glass over to Jasper and watched them push their straw in and make a face at the carbonation. She slightly snickered.

"You like this?" Jasper questioned her as they sipped their water.

"It's something you get used to," she answered with a faint smile.

"Even though it is weird? It was like something was attacking my mouth."

"But it's better than sparkling water, that taste like angry water." She straightened up. "And the carbonation feels good on a sore throat."

"..." They stared at her with big eyes. "Tell me something about yourself."

She frowned as she gazed at the people walking by, deciding on what to say. She gave a basic answer like her age, birthday, favorite food, favorite flower. They inquired about her family, but she kept it simple by stating she had a mother, father and older brother.

Their head tilted from her blank expression, opening their mouth to say something when the food arrived. Curiosity was clear on their face as they looked at the bowl of red liquid and steam floating up.

A spoon swirled around in the bowl and turned their face up in hesitation. She suggested dipping a slice of bread in the soup and trying it that way. A bread piece was dipped in and carefully took a bite, chewing while processing the flavor. The piece was dipped again and still thought about the taste.

"Is it good?" Their head slowly nodded.

She nodded back and turned to her plate, grabbing the thick burger and biting in to her savory breakfast. She picked up a fry from the plate and offered it to them, their eyes blinking at the stick, then to her.

"Try it."

They took it and bit into it, tilting their head, then finishing the piece. She faintly smiled.

The trunk closed after placing the bags of home essentials inside and turned to the clothing store in front of them. The bell rang and got greeted by a man at the counter. Crystalis moved over to the racks of shirts and dresses, deciding on which one she should grab, a bit excited because she didn't have to look at the price tag. The weather would getting colder in time, so she needed appropriate clothing for it.

Jasper approached her with a flowery dress. She complimented it, but stated the need for warmer clothes. They frowned and disappeared somewhere in the store. She sighed, continuing to search and passing by a mirror on the wall.

Forest green eyes, medium brown hair and a pale face greeted her. Nothing seemed different, the plain old Crystalis staring back. A glance to the person she was now living with, their appearance captured into words. Fluffy brownish red hair that shined under the sunlight, red flower petal eyes and medium almond skin with freckles adorning their face.

A customer appeared behind her and apologized for startling her. The brunette reset her thoughts and picked up a couple of tops and bottoms before moving over to the changing room. Swapping and posing, clicking hangers and deciding what was comfortable when a knock stopped her. Her head peeked out to the red gem pushing two dresses in and shutting the door.

Taking a look, the two dresses were a red flowered navy blue and a yellow flowered white. Both were too small. She exited the room and greeted them as they beamed at her for a opinion.

"Both were too small," their head drooped, "but I like the white dress." They bounced back and raced for a correct size.

She called out and told them what it was, dropping her shoulders and setting the clothes she wanted in a basket. She turned to a different section and ran through the list in her mind, checking them off when the items landed in the basket, then noticed a white dress being "sneaky" placed in said basket.

Crystalis' body stretched outside the store, the wind ripping through the street and freezing their bodies. Both of them complained about the weather as a person in a tank top and cargo shorts blessed the weather.

Jasper wondered what was next to visit as the brunette held her chin and answered, "we need to find a store with underwear and socks, then we can head hom- head back to the house."

The jerk pointed and directed them to a store with a yellow heart on the window. She thanked him and headed towards that direction. Inside, she immediately covered their eyes at the lewd- I'm kidding. The two entered a normal store, but she did feel a bit embarrassed.

The trip was quick, even got some nice pajamas, and left in full success. The bags in her hands were passed to the red gem and suggested they head back to the car while she got the driver. The coffee shop he walked towards seemed to be close by, peeking in and looking around, it made her feel awkward.

He was in the corner, a book on his face and snoozing? She took the book and gently smacked him with it. He woke up instantly and saw her, groaning as he stood up and stretched out his body which popped his back, then gestured for her to follow.

The ride back to the house was quiet, watching the trees pass and disappear into the houses. The car pulled in to the driveway of the beige two story house, opening and shutting the doors, then retreating the many bags in the trunk.

The driver offered to help, but she answered her roommate and her can handle it. He leaned against the car, arms crossed, and inquired if she was sure by the fact both of their arms were full.

Jasper accepted the help, but she stood firm on declining, gesturing for them to start heading inside. The keys she found next to the house phone earlier slid in to the lock and clicked, pushing the door open and having Jasper enter first, then herself.

The man stood in front of the door, a good distance away, and asked if he could hand her something before leaving. She set the bags down and held the door, reaching out a hand where a piece of paper was placed in the palm.

He waved a good bye and hopped in the car, driving away and disappearing down the road. The door closed and relocked, gazing down at the paper to see a phone number.

... Did he just ask me out?

A move like that never happened before and had to process it for a moment. Crystalis couldn't. She just came to this world yesterday and was in no state to start a relationship, especially with a important task hanging over head.

The paper was shoved in her pocket and carried the bags to the living room, sitting down next to the other and unloading everything on the coffee table. Clothing were unwrapped and tossed in a laundry basket, separating the lights from darks, undergarments from pajamas.

Laundry detergent rested in one of the baskets as they both carried each one to the garage and set down in front of the washer and dryer. Eyes landed on the red sport car parked in the garage, making they both want to check it out. But they couldn't right now, they had chores to do.

The bedding was the first load tossed in the washer, trying to remember how much of the detergent and which settings to set. Once that got started, she went back inside and organized the bathroom and kitchen essentials, using empty paper bags for the organization.

They decided who would take care of the kitchen and who would take care of the bathroom. She got the bathroom, carrying the bags on her arms and climbing upstairs to the elegant green walls and tiled floors.

The bags were placed on the counter and pulled out everything for the walk-in shower, hooking the shelf over the showerhead and filling it up with shampoo, body wash, rags, etc. The rest of the essentials were lined up on the counter where a large mirror hung over two sinks. Everything was either placed next to the sinks or underneath.

She stepped outside and heard the dishes being washed and placed on the island to dry. She came downstairs and into the garage to check the bedding, tossing the pile in the dryer and setting it to start. The towels were pushed in to the washer and turned back on, standing up and looking towards the car.

She shrugged and called her roommate out to check it out with her. She inserted the key and clicked the locks to undo, swinging the door open and gazing at the black interior. The seats were soft but firm, a screen on the dashboard, sunglasses holder and even a sunroof.

Jasper's eyes sparkled in amazing, jumping into the back and almost kicking her in the face. They bounced on the seat and asked for a ride, but they couldn't because she couldn't drive.

They pouted sadly, wanting to explore around on this island. She perked up at that and turned back to speak when their stomach growled. It was time for dinner. The two got out of the car and stepped inside the house, wondering on what to eat.

The red gem confidently stated they will cook and pushed her towards the couch to rest. She began to decline, only to get hushed and the remote control placed in her hand. She shook her head slightly with a shrug, clicking the TV on and surfing the channels.

The smell that came behind her a few minutes later made her stomach growl at the ginger and something else sizzling in a pan. She lay down on the couch and stopped on a movie that seemed to just started.

The image projected in her mind by the surroundings: something playing on the TV, lying on a couch with the kitchen lights behind her and lighting up the living room enough to see, and the sound of food being cooked. It felt normal. No, it felt like she was in a friend's house or visiting someone. It was a pretty sight, a simple sight, a sight that made her eyelids heavy.

"It is done!" Jasper yelled and startled her fully awake.

She mentally cursed out and got up to walk over to the table, being handed a plate of sliced potatoes and chicken. She grew concerned at seeing the meat, questioning why they chose chicken.

They expressed wanting to try it and eagerly cut into said chicken clumsily. The first bite had a confused, hardened expression, one unable to read.

"Strong," they finally spoke after a long pause.

She tilted her head at the comment and tried the chicken herself. It was good, juicy and tender, however, the ginger was a bit strong.

"You kinda went overboard with the ginger," she commented. "Try scraping some of the ginger off to make it less strong."

They did what she said and made a less unpleasant look, unsure on how to feel about the meat.

"If you don't like it, that's okay." She took another bite of the dinner.

Silverware moved across dishes, conversation beginning by the red gem expressing amazement on what mortal created and the appearance of the realm itself.

"Mortals?" The brunette said it like a statement than a question.

They chewed and swallowed, then answered, "that is what Poppy and Destiny called them."

Her brows wrinkled at a thought. "... Are you immortal?"

The fork rising towards their mouth stopped and rested their arm on the table. "I do not know."

Jasper stretched out on the couch with their new smartphone in hand, playing with the settings and scrolling through the apps. Crystalis was currently taking a nap in her room, leaving them bored after returning from the technology store. They were excited for this new thing called Wi-Fi after doing nothing but chores for three days.

However, Crystalis wanted to setup the router together despite them wanting to do it now. Their body went rag doll on the couch, pouting like a child. Their eyes lazily scanned the books stacked on the coffee table they requested.

They sat up and reached for the first one on top, reading the few lines when a sound suddenly was heard outside. They perked their head up and curiously walked down the hallway under the stairs to the glass backdoor. The doors opened up to the rain pouring down on the backyard, the sound was like music on their ears, a peaceful melody performing on its own.

They stepped out of the house and under the covering, smelling the gentle air as it lightly blew upon their skin, gazing at the darken sky crying on the land. A hand reached out to touch the continuous droplets of water as it splashed on their relax palm, feeling the cooling temperature rolling off from their hand.

Then thunder hit and they ran inside.

They leaned against the wall and held their chest at the jumpscare, retreating to the living room and curling up in a chair. Crystalis came out of her room and walked downstairs to them giving her puppy eyes.

"What's wrong?" She came closer to them.

"That loud noise, the rain scared me," their voice sounded heartbroken at being betrayed.

She chuckled. "Yeah, that happens. It sucks when it happens in the middle of the night."

They made a face, then relaxed. "I guess it woke you up."

She gathered her hair to pull it behind her as she sat down. "Yeah, but it prevented me from sleeping too long. Want to start setting up the router?"

They nodded and got up to grab it. The two began reading and struggling with the setup and where to put it, eventually agreeing on putting one of the side tables against the wall. She typed out the code and sighed in relief at it working. They pushed her over at wanting to look at her phone.

She swapped phones with them to enter the code and gave it back, watching them immediately press the internet app and realized they didn't know what to search up, turning to her for her input.

"Uh... before you start exploring the internet, I need to warn you." She began telling them about the dangers of online, websites that aren't safe, what websites to stay away from, the rules to follow, and the people they could meet.

"And some people will try to... trick you and hurt you by lying about who they are, or using tricks to keep you by their side to continue their cruelty. I just wanted to make you aware of that so you can keep yourself safe. The internet is still a magical place where you can meet new people, see amazing works of art from different types of people, and learn about the world around you. But just be careful on who you trust and what you see."

They thanked her for the warning, promising to be careful; though, she was still worried. They raced off to their room while she unwrapped the laptop she got for her own research on this world.
